Cheptiret Anti-Stock Theft Unit(ASTU) has been closed down following pressure from Kapseret MP Oscar Sudy.
Sudy had early this month led area residents in a protest urging the government to immediately redeploy the officers and replace them with regular police officers.
This was after the lawmaker was roughed up by a police officer from the ASTU manning a roadblock near Cheptiret Trading Center in Uasin Gishu.
The Legislator had called on the Government to shut down the ASTU camp following harassment claims by area residents.
Sudy had questioned the existence of an ASTU camp in Cheptiret where cattle rusting is unheard of. He condemned the brutality by the security officers saying police harassments have no place in the 21st century.
“There is no cattle theft cases at Cheptiret in Uasin Gishu. The government should immediately transfer all the anti-stock theft officers and replace them with regular police officers,” Sudy had demanded.
The ASTU officers have now been replaced by regular police officers.
Cheptiret residents have lauded the move saying the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) had turned their base into kangaroo court and torture cells.
“We thank Kapseret MP Oscar Sudy for his efforts to ensure this officers are redeployed They had turned the place into a torture chamber for residents arrested on flimsy grounds,” said a resident.
