Uasin Gishu: Demolitions underway in Eldoret Town

MASS demolition exercise is
underway in Eldoret town in what the County Governor says is a bid to decongest the town.

Governor Mandago , visited the sites to
witness the demolition of more
than 400 temporary structures and
business kiosks.

He explained that all the people
whose properties were being
bulldozed would not be
compensated as they were operating illegaly.

Governor Mandago said some operators
continued to occupy the
structures despite being asked to
leave , hoping that the exercise was just a passing
cloud would be surprised.

The demolitions has caused a public outcry with Market Ward County representative Hon Peter Chomba saying the occupants would have been given enough notice to relocate,”If you see women fainting and men crying, you will realize we are being inhuman to them,”added Hon Chomba.

“This has been my source of living for fifteen years, only to be destroyed in seconds,”cried one Kiosk owner.

“I took a bank loan to start my Kiosk,I haven’t even finished repaying it and now it is no more,” added another. “It is painfull that we had operating permits that we were given by the Municipal council.”
