Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson
Mandago will have to go back to the
drawing board after members of
his County Assembly rejected
nominees to the executive
committee Friday.

The County Assembly members
accused Mr Mandago of failing to
strike ethnic and gender balance in
coming up with the eight cabinet
nominees citing it as the main
reason why they unanimously
rejected the names.

Out of the eight names, there was
only one woman Margaret
Chepkwony (public service
management) while the rest were
men said to have been drawn from
one community, causing an uproar
among residents who accused the
governor of locking out other
communities.

“The list was unconstitutional as it
failed to meet the gender rule as
enshrined in the Constitution. Uasin
Gishu is a cosmopolitan region and
the final list failed to represent all
the communities,” said Huruma
Ward representative Peter Chomba.

The governor was also accused of
using the appointments to reward
his political allies believed to have
funded his campaigns. Uasin Gishu
has six constituencies and residents
wanted at least one executive from
each area.

“The governor should now go back
to the drawing board and address
these issues as he comes up with a
new list,” said Mr James Kimaiyo,
from Kapseret.

  1. Looking at the list of nominees, it consisted of highly qualified men unfortunately women were poorly represented as stipulated by the constitution.
However, it is worth noting that all the 47 counties in Kenya are cosmopolitan and all governors starting from Kisumu to Meru should revise their list of nominees to reflect a national face if UG county is expected to do the same.
